The Journalist Day in Ukraine is celebrated annually on June 6. This date was chosen to commemorate the fact that on June 6, 1992, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine was admitted to the International Federation of Journalists, the largest organization for media professionals.

History of the celebration
The day was officially established by a decree from the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk, on May 25, 1994. Since then, journalists, correspondents, and reporters receive congratulations from colleagues, friends, and readers. On this day, awards for merits in journalism are also presented, including prizes and scholarships.

Goals of the celebration
Journalist Day is an opportunity to highlight the important role of journalists in society and recognize their contribution to the development of democracy and freedom of expression. The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of independent and objective journalism.

Contemporary challenges
In the context of the war with Russia, Ukrainian journalists face enormous dangers. Many journalists have become victims of attacks, especially in occupied territories and on the front line. During the full-scale war, more than 90 journalists have died, underscoring the high price of their work during the conflict.

This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of the safety and protection of journalists' rights, who continue their work despite the risks.
